Because we can capitalize on profits from tourism, we have decided to enact a social enterprise and solidarity economy model rather than a traditional non-profit. Like this, we do not depend upon donations and can create long term sustainable projects with the local community.
1. Educational projects: We believe that education is the foundation for success. As mentioned earlier, the lodge also serves as an educational center. We offer free lessons to locals to teach them how to read, write, speak English, adopt healthy habits, etc.
Even though the lodge was not officially open at that time, in 2018 we launched a project to provide free material and English classes to the local community.
2. Housing: A lot of people cannot afford conventional housing, so they build themselves an unsafe, makeshift shelter. We believe everybody has the right to proper housing, so we teach everybody, who wishes to learn, how to build their own house with natural and recycled materials. We also strive to support the local community by lending them the tools they need, along with guided expertise throughout construction.
3.Employment/support local entrepreneurs: Unemployment is a major issue in Nicaragua. We are already helping by providing jobs and opportunities to locals. Still, we cannot hire everybody and the job opportunities are often missing or inadequate for disabled people, single mothers or seniors. We try to support those who wish to start their own business through CDEP and help them to create better lives for themselves and their families.
Developing projects requires time, expertise and money. In the long run, we wish to develop more partnerships to have an even greater impact. Please let us know if you can help us in any way!
